The Urban Tails Puppy Program is a carefully structured five step journey designed to introduce your puppy to professional grooming in a calm, positive and age appropriate way. Rather than expecting them to manage an entire groom on their first visit, each stage gradually builds their comfort with handling, bathing, drying, grooming equipment, haircuts and detailed styling.
Every puppy progresses at their own pace. Some move through the program quickly, while others benefit from repeating a stage before moving forward. Our focus is not simply achieving a beautiful first haircut, but helping your puppy develop the confidence and skills needed for a lifetime of calm grooming.

Step 01
Puppy Confidence Visit
A complimentary 10 to 15 minute visit for your puppy to meet their groomer, explore the salon and become familiar with the environment without the pressure of completing a service.
THIS IS NOT A GROOM but a complimentary nail trim may be performed if your puppy is comfortable.
Puppies must be under six months old and have completed their final puppy vaccinations.
For the best foundations, we recommend attending within the first few weeks after vaccinations are complete.
Step 02
Puppy Hygiene Training
Your puppy’s first hands on appointment introduces bathing, drying, brushing, handling and grooming equipment.
No length is removed from the body. Only the eye corners, paw pads, hygiene areas and face are gently tidied where appropriate and as much as your puppy comfortably allows.
Most puppies benefit from repeating this stage before progressing to their first haircut.
Step 03
Puppy’s Haircut Training
Your puppy is gradually introduced to clipper vibrations, full body handling and their first haircut.
The body is clipped using one suitable, even comb length, while the face, feet and hygiene areas are tidied according to your puppy’s comfort.
The focus is a calm and successful experience rather than detailed styling. Most puppies benefit from repeating this stage before moving forward.
Step 4
Puppy’s Got Style
This step introduces your puppy to longer grooming sessions and more detailed styling.
They receive a styled full body haircut, including the face and tail, while the feet and hygiene areas are carefully tidied.
Extra time is allowed for reassurance, gentle coaching and breaks as your puppy becomes comfortable with scissor finishing and detailed coat work.
Some puppies will be ready to progress after this stage, while others benefit from repeating it as their confidence, patience and grooming skills continue to develop.
Step 05
Puppy’s Graduation Groom
The final stage is your puppy’s first complete adult groom. It brings together the bathing, handling, coat preparation and styling skills they have developed throughout the program.
After graduation, your groomer will recommend an ongoing schedule suited to your dog’s breed, coat, lifestyle and styling needs.
Puppies who complete the program and establish a recurring grooming schedule receive a complimentary bow or bandana with every future groom booked as part of that schedule.
